From frustration to innovation:
How the UbiDuo was born.
Jason Curry, CEO of sComm, and his father David Curry, co-founder, were sitting in a local restaurant having coffee in 2002 and discussing investment properties in real estate. A problem arose. David was an insurance salesman who was on the road for most of Jason’s childhood and because he was working hard to support his family, he wasn’t always there for the weekly sign classes the rest of the family and neighborhood attended. Sure, David could sign, but not fast enough to have the complex conversation necessary to discuss investment properties. What should have been a 30-minute discussion ended up taking three hours. That was unacceptable.
That same day, David came up with the idea for the UbiDuo. He sketched a simple drawing on the whiteboard hanging in the family’s kitchen. His vision for a simple, yet revolutionary product would forever change the way he communicated with his deaf son.
Realizing this could be life-changing for many deaf and hard of hearing people, the family sought to make their dream a reality by obtaining two Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from the National Institutes of Health in 2005. Through the grants, they were able to test the feasibility of the product and confirm it would improve face-to-face communication between deaf and hearing people. They founded sComm and began development of the first UbiDuo.
Just like that, one man’s determination to have a meaningful and personal conversation with his son brought the same life-enriching accessibility to thousands of other deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals across the country.
