New Augmentative Communication Device In Use At Perry And deLacey

Letter from Ron Ziolkowski to the staff at deLacy and Perry Elementary School, and forwarded to Jason Curry, sComm CEO:

All:

This is to notify you of a new augmentative communication device being used by Eugene Cancio, technology coordinator for deLacey and Perry Elementary School.

The device is called the "UbiDuo" - it is a simple two-way communication tool that will allow you to communicate quickly and effectively with Eugene by simply typing him a message. As long as you know how to type, you can easily use this device to communicate with him.

According to SComm, makers of the UbiDuo, it "is a communication device that enables deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people to communicate with each other face to face, anywhere, anytime without any barriers."

Unlike an instant messaging system, the UbiDuo will display the message you are typing as you are typing it - in real time. No need to press "enter." Spelling and punctuation are not important here, you just type want you want to say, as best as you can type it, and don’t worry about mistakes. Also, users of the UbiDuo can both type and send messages simultaneously - don’t even need to wait for the other person to finish their message before you begin to type your response!

Here is a photo of Eugene with the new devices in his office at deLacey:

And here is a close-up shot of one of the devices:

If you have an opportunity, please stop by and visit Eugene, and have a chat with him using the UbiDuo!

Much thanks to Eric Willard and the Technology Department for funding this device.

Thank you,

Ron Ziolkowski
Special Education Technologist
